Picture-in-Picture Meme

There are all kinds of fun and fascinating memes floating around the blogosphere. You know... the quizzes, lists, surveys and such. You may also have noticed that I don't normally indulge in them here at treppenwitz.

It's not that I don't find them interesting... nothing could be further from the truth. I find them to be great fun, not to mention a fantastic way to pass time while on a conference call. However, I prefer to use my journal space to share things that have some kind of a connection to me or my ideas... not stuff that I've had no hand in creating.

I realize this may sound a little selfish, or even snobby, but I have too much of my own content that I never get around to publishing... why would I post something to which I have no connection or stake?

I guess all I really needed to do was ask that question because as soon as I did, a more personalized meme arrived (hat tip to Chuck and Red Sugar, among others) that offers an opportunity for the readers here at treppenwitz to take an active hand in some of treppenwitz's content... a loose collaboration of sorts.

Without further ado, I give you... The Photo Meme (or as I like to call it, 'the picture-in-picture meme', because it is an opportunity to see small glimpses within the larger picture).

Here's how it works:

Leave me a comment listing three things you'd like me to photograph and post. They can be things in my house... views from my window... a spot in my neighborhood or along my commute... things I've mentioned in previous posts... basically (within reason) any person place or thing to which I have access.

You get the idea. I'm over here and you lot (like the way I did that Beth?) are spread out around the world... so what kind of images will give you a better understanding of my world?

Needless to say (um, or maybe there is a need since I'm gonna say it anyway), I reserve all editorial rights and make no apology for taking artistic license.

A bookshelf.. the most prominent bookshelf at home...

I like the meme

1. The view from your office window (or bedroom window at home if no office window)
2. Your monitor/workspace at work.
3. Whatever's in front of you when you point the camera north at 3:45 pm local time

Posted by: Chuck | Oct 12, 2004 5:42:04 PM

1. The inside of your Fridge (always curious to see what treats you have there)
2. Jordan (we need updated pics!)
3. A bustling street full of shoppers on Friday afternoon (AH, the erev shabbas rush!)

So far so good... keep 'em coming.

Remember, it doesn't have to be about me... if there is something about Israel you've wanted to see... this is your big chance!

Oh, one more thing... I work for one of Israel's largest aerospace/defense companies so I am prohibited by law from taking personal photographs at work (so Chuck, feel free to redefine the parameters of #2 & #3).

I'll snap your pictures as the requests come in and post them together one day next week.

Redefining...

2. Your workspace at home
3. Due north at 3:45 a.m. (Ha! But if you don't want to set your alarm, let's make it due north three hours and forty-five minutes after you leave the office. Yes, I seem to be hung up on 345 here. Dunno why.)

Oh, there are so many easy lines here, but in the interest of decorum I will refrain.

How about this:

1) A picture of the books you own. Shelved or otherwise.

2) Picture of the music you own.

3) Sunset from your home

1. Your favorite restaurant.
2. Your synagogue.
3. Any type of animal that could not be found in the US.(Hoping for a camel...but will accept something else if more convenient)

I'd like to see the following:

Your favourite vista on your drive to work

A shepherd and his flock

A can of Luf

Thank you.

Do the toilets look like the ones in the states?

Are there brothels there?

I would like to see a picture of a guy with a really long white beard

Posted by: jason | Oct 13, 2004 2:47:56 PM

OK... so far so good... interesting requests!

Although Jason... some of yours are more questions than actual photo requests.

For instance, toilets are pretty much the same as in the U.S. but here they have a double handle - one for, um, small flushes and one for, er, things that require bigger flushes. This is a water saving device. If you still want a picture, I'll be happy to comply.

As to your second question, I am fairly sure that the world's oldest profession is alive and well here (heck, I think it began here)... but sadly I have no first hand experience with it. [Light bulb blinking on!!!] Y'know, this could be a fun thing to look into! Hold on a sec while I ask my wife if I can do some investigative field work in order to honor your implied photo request.

OK, I'm back. Nope!!! Can you believe it... she said no! I tried explaining that it was for the photo meme, but it didn't seem to help.

Oh well... Sorry Jason, you have two more pictures you can request! :-)

Women. Sheesh.

Posted by: Chuck | Oct 13, 2004 4:17:48 PM

1. a picture of your living room
2. the front of your house
3. one of your kids rooms (no cleaning up...just raw) and if they are in there...all the better.

Posted by: Lisa | Oct 13, 2004 7:16:57 PM

1. The Kitchen
2. Zahava's garden
3. The coffee store that you found.

Posted by: Marjorie | Oct 13, 2004 11:34:01 PM

Take a picture of something that makes you mad.

Posted by: Jim | Oct 14, 2004 2:48:40 AM

Did you take any Fall pictures with the changes in the color of tree leaves?

Have you taken a recent picture of you and your wife? (Might be time for an updated family photo session)

Dont worry about the toilet picture, in Iraq there are two toilets one to wash your backside I guess thats why I was curious and the pictures of women hanging out a door or looking out a window at a brother intrest me cause I have never seen that in person but I would never want to risk you getting into trouble with the misses. Take care

Posted by: jason | Oct 14, 2004 7:05:10 AM

Oh, this is fun!!!
1. The magical French Press in action
2. Something that is quintessentially "Israeli," for those of us who are um, y'know, landlocked in the Midwestern US, but still are trying to work on their world view.
3. The infamous BogMobile- and don't you DARE clean it!

Posted by: Lisa | Oct 14, 2004 3:14:34 PM

1. Your morning soldiers, sleeping. (Just turn around at the wheel while driving, it'll be an adventure.)

2. Jordan in a Red Sox cap.

3. Something stereotypically American, labelled in Hebrew. (Like a Coke can, but you can't use that now.)
