Photo Friday (vol. LXXIX) [Emu Feather edition]
Way behind today with Shabbat and Sukkah preparations, but it was in a good cause. I was with a group of visiting Aussies from the Multinational Forces in Sinai (as well as from the Embassy in Tel Aviv) touring the WWI historical sites around Beer Sheva (I wrote about it here).
Since I sort of cheated you out of a photo Friday, here's a shot of our Sukkah with the table all ready to be set (hmmm, I think that's my job!).
The hat on the table is an authentic Australian Army slouch hat which was a gift from Captain J.T. (I'm not sure if he'd want me to publish his name) of the Australian Army. He is rotating back to Australia in a few weeks where he has a new fiance waiting for him (Mazal Tov!). This morning was the first time he'd ever heard of Sukkot... so in his honor the hat he gave me has a place of honor in the 'hut' about which he is now well versed.
Oh, and as to the title of this edition... the distinctive feather in the slouch hat is an Emu feather.

Nice hat! In fact, I didn't realise the design was distinctive to Australia until I read this post and then searched wikipedia for more information. It's always nice to see Australians around the world helping out and sharing cultures. Chag Sameach and Shabbat Shalom!

I guess having the kids sitting around that table might have A) added too much color to the picture? B)taken away from the hat? C) made Auntie Val way TOO happy???!!!!

Is the hat higher than the brim is broad? :)
I like the Indiana Jones movies and always wanted to have a fedora like his. But all the fedoras I found did not have the charm of Indy's. One day - on a flea market - I saw a hat that was no fedora but did have the charm and I fell in love with it at once. Later I found out why. It's Australian. A friend told me, that the head pieces of Australian hats are made higher than the brim is broad. Don't know if this is true, but later I found out that Indy's fedora was actually made in Australia, that is, the center piece is higher than the American version.

Did this hat go in the box with the sukkot decorations or do you plan a use for it year round? It seems to proud a hot to sit in a box...
